Pie Thief

My father might be an evil genius. Or perhaps he is just trolling me and it is all a joke and not a conspiracy to drive me insane.  At the very least, it can be said that he is a man that works in mysterious ways.

This past Christmas, my father gifted me five large ramekins. This in itself is not strange. My father has gifted me instruments of baking persuasion in the past.  Five is a little bit of an odd number, but not anything questionable.

The real mystery started with the discussion with my father on what inspired him to send me crockery. I am not complaining about the dishes, I am just curious. My father normally has something that inspired him.  This something that inspired him happens to be chicken pot pie.  The sort of chicken pot pie that has a flakey crust at the top and not the noodle concoction that is native to the area that I live.  The question I had was where did he get the ramekins. The answer I received wasn’t clear.

After multiple conversations with my father, I have been able to deduce that the crockery came from some sort of place that sells these pies that can be heated at home. My father bought these delicious pies, ate them and saved the crockery. The ramekins are worth at least $9 a piece. My father assume that my husband would not be adverse to pot pies. He was enabling my husband to enjoy a pot pie life.

The concept that a place will let you make off with their dishware is foreign to me. If feels like a bad restaurant model to replace dishes with take out orders. I have begun to research how to send a pie by mail and if said pie comes in its own crockery.  This search may have resulted in me sending at least on pie to a friend randomly.

My husband has a theory that my father is absconding with the pies and sending me the crockery to coverup the theft. I do not think my father is a pie thief. However my father has informed me that he has acquired more ramekins. My husband lives in fear that we will be taken over by pilfered crockery.   The more I subtlety question my father about the pot pie, the more vague he gets.  The more vague he gets, the more pie I make, so I can bring up the topic. My husband gets to live his best meat pie life as this mystery continues.

I have  fixed over half a dozen different pot pies for my husband and brother in law since the arrival of ramekins.  Maybe we all need to eat a little more pie in our life and not worry about the details of the crockery.

Screaming on the Inside

Have you ever wondered what it is like to scream on the inside?  There are several memes out there that cover this succulently.  However I have a story that illustrates it beautiful for me.

I am visiting with my brothers family for an early Christmas.  My brothers, oldest daughter, Hannah and I are doing some female bonding by cleaning the impurities out of our pours with a clay face mask. I don’t normally partake in face masks all that often and after having the middle child, Hailey practice her make skills on my face, cleaning impurities seemed like a really good idea.  (My eyeshadow reached my eyebrows in a shocking 80’s blue and I am pretty sure the she tried to scrub the foundation into my skin to make it match.)

Hannah  pulled out the heavy duty clay mask (Aztec Secret) to dig everything out of my pours, because even after cleaning my face, I still felt like I was wearing make up.  Despite my trepidation about the advertising, Hannah assured me that she had used this several times, and the pulsating was normal.   I worry about things that advertise pulsation.

Like with any mask, as it dries my nose will inevitably begin to itch. And then my face began to tighten, and then tighten some more where it looked like I was scowling because I couldn’t move my face.  My cheeks couldn’t move, my forehead was stuck in place and you don’t realize how much you move your nose, until you can’t.  And yes, the mask pulsates slightly. Or it was all the blood rushing to my nose. I am not sure.
It comes time to remove the mask. Now, we have to be quiet, because the youngest is sleeping, and my sister in law has promised death to us if we woke him up. Hannah and I are in the bathroom getting ready to warm compress the mask off or scrub the dickens out of our faces when it happens. I had to sneeze.  I went from not being able to move my face at all, to moving it all at once as I silently sneezed. I know what agony feels like. Every nerve ending in my faced screamed “Witness Me”as if it was on Fury Road as it went through all the contortions involved with a sneeze.

Hannah stood amazed. The silent scream was in my eyes.   Now, whenever I think about screaming on the inside, I think about that feeling.

Pizza Chicken - A Compromise

The Year of the Pizza Chicken

Sometimes dinner takes a little bit of creative compromise.

Me: What do you want for dinner Christmas Eve?

Jon: 🍕

Me: We are not having pizza.

Jon: 😢

Me: Beef, Chicken or Pork?

Jon: 🐔

Jon: ...🍕🐔

Me: I’ll figure it out.

And this is why I have Pinterest.  I found the perfect combination of Pizza and Chicken that would look good on Christmas Eve dinner plate.  The recipe by Simply Stacie was wonderful to follow.

My husband took the lead on the prepping the chicken by pounding it flat and then rolling it with the stuffing.  Simply put, the Chicken is laid flat and then filled with a combination of red sauce, pepperoni and cheese. It is then rolled and then topped with more sauce pepperoni and cheese. The cheese rolled into the sauce prevents the chicken from being dry and the pepperoni adds a savoriness to the chicken.  The chicken went nicely with garlic rice and sautéed spinach and carrots.  It was the perfect meal for a semi fancy meal.

In honestly it was one of the simplest recipes I have ever done, since all I did was the filling and turn the oven on. In fact two out of three people at the table seemed to love the recipe and mentioned that they wouldn’t mind eating it again, which I consider a win for a holiday experiemnt.  If you are looking for something different to fix that leave you with a flavorful moist chicken, I would recommend Pizza Stuffed Chicken.

Christmas Cake

One of the things that I enjoy about the holidays is spending time with people that I care about.  I am not the sort of person that enjoys sitting around, but rather having a project or purpose. This year my mother in law and I took on a challenge of making a special cake for Christmas.

The cake covered all the family favorites, and stretched the comfort zone of my baking skills. (Anytime I have to use a spring form pan, I get a little nervous.)The delectable delight that was on the menu was a moist carrot cake with a rich and creamy cheesecake center covered in sweet buttercream icing and sprinkled with chopped nuts.  The cake could have turned out terrible, and it wouldn't have mattered.  I had fun hanging out with my mother in law while we caught up on family events. It also didn't hurt that we had to lick the beaters for the butter cream icing.

Many cups of tea and several ounces of cream cheese later, we had a beautiful and delicious cake. I have come to the conclusion that baking is alway more enjoyable when you have good company.  Everything is sweeter with family.

If you are interested in making your own carrot cake with cheesecake filling,  check out this recipe  by wickedgoodkitchen,  it is similar to the one that we made.

Burrito Pillow Case

Not your typical burrito!
Purple & Green pillow case!
Every now and then I go through my Pinterest list and try something new.  I have recently taken up the hobby of sewing and my Pinterest additions have certainly reflected the new hobby.  My mother in law as an early Christmas present gifted me a lovely sewing machine that has more stitches then I know what to do with. (I am pretty excited to try everything.)  To break in the new machine, I decided I would attempt to make French Cuffed Pillow Case and cross something off of my Pinterest list.

I pulled the pattern for the pillow cases from https://www.makeit-loveit.com and then cross referenced it with a lovely blog on the same thing https://blog.treasurie.com . (I have found it prudent to cross reference before adventures, it prevents obvious missteps.) Both of the sites referenced a burrito method for making the pillowcases. Reading through the steps, I have to admit I was a little intimidated. Most patterns require you to do something inside out and backwards. Making a burrito is something that I do for breakfast or occasionally dinner, but never in sewing.

Pillow Case folded in half. Success!
Love the new machine!
First, I would like to say that the sewing machine is a champ. Something that I would normally be re threading the needle for possibly a dozen times, was smooth sailing. Second... Who wants pillow cases?  I might be a burrito convert. All my quilts might end up with a matching pillow case, since this was probably one of the easiest patterns I have ever done, and it looked good.  I am excited to make more pillow cases and possibly fancy them up with a couple of awesome stitches the new sewing machine can do.

Exploring the Caverns

Cold winter days are meant for exploring caves. Did you know it is a constant 52 degrees in a cave? Which means it is at least 20 degrees warmer in the cave then it is outside of the cave.  My dad came out for an early Christmas visit, and part of the fun of his visits is the amount of adventures and tourist things we get to go do.
I love caves.   Indian Echo Caverns is local to me, and I decided that it was a necessary father -daughter bonding experience to visit this cave. The caverns are a fun place to visit and the tour is about 45 minutes at a leisurely pace. I enjoyed the caverns.  One of the unique things about this cavern is that it is still living and growing.   You get the pleasure of seeing formations as they are growing and marvel at have shiny they are with the calcite growth.
My dad has never done a cave tour before, so this was unique experience for him. During the walk down the seventy two steps, my dad joked that he was claustrophobic.  Considering I have done mine tours with him, I know this is not case, but I did chuckle at the couple of low hanging passage ways that caused him to duck.  I enjoyed the tour and even spent some quality time with their goats and feisty old turkey.
If you are ever in the Hershey area, and looking for something to do other than the amusement park, I would recommend the caverns.  There is enough diversity there to keep the whole family entertained and is open all year long.  Then again, I also like caves, so my opinion may be a little bias.

Name that Movie

I was on the phone with my niece, Hannah the other night and we were reminiscing  about last Christmas.  With us mostly talking about how annoying I can be, but how much fun it is anyway. It is really hard to disguise a DVD. You can put it inside of a box, to disguise the shape, but that is pretty much it unless you want to expend a lot of time and effort. Last year when I sent the gifts down, there were a couple of DVD's mixed in.

Hannah thought that since she knew it was a DVD and it had her name on it, she should be able to open it.  I disagreed at the time and still do,  but after listening to a teenagers  insistent and somewhat repetitive reasoning I was willing to give a little, even if it was for my own piece of mind.   I would let her open the gift wrapped DVD if she could guess what it was. Just like with any guessing game there needed to be clues.

This is where I get to be annoying. I limited it to two clues and she could use the internet (because, let's face it, she was going to do it anyway), but they were not going to be easy clues. I can still remember the way she rolled her eyes and let out an annoyed sigh and then demanded the clues, sure that she would get it right away.

First Clue:  The letter "F" is in the title somewhere

Second Clue:  Bill Murray

I was feeling pretty brilliant. Go look up Bill Murray movies that have the letter "F' somewhere in the title.  His IMBD list is as long as Santa's Naughty list.  I was only partially crushed, but not surprised she didn't know who Bill Murray was, after all she didn't know what X Files was either, but now she does.  The amount of guessing and begging for another clue was like a symphony of angels to my ears.  If she wanted to open that DVD before Christmas, she had to earn it.  Getting it right away, did not happen, and she had to wait until Christmas to open it.

Now we roll around to this year, and spoiler alert, there is another DVD in the stack.  I think I might offer the same game to her.  Hannah, if you can guess the DVD, you can open it.

First Clue: The letter "M" is in the title somewhere

Second Clue: The writer is related to comics.

I know these aren't awesome clues, mostly because the internet exists, but if Hannah can guess the movie, I'll let her open it.  Welcome to the new Christmas tradition. Good luck!

For those that are wondering what she got last year, it was The Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Secret Agents for Santa

I think my cats might be secret agents for Santa. Or at least that is the thought that came to when I was in the shower and Iggins sat there and watched me the entire time, despite his fear of being hit with a drop of water.

Holiday music is slowly amping up on radio stations, store stations and doctors waiting rooms. Whether you are pro holiday music creep or anti holiday music creep it is going to creep its way into you brain anyway.  Which is how the line, "He knows when you are sleeping, He knows when your awake," popped into my brain when I could see Iggins watching me.

Cats would be the perfect secret agents for Santa, because my cats definitely know when I am sleeping, and know when I am awake.  In fact Dib will grumble and meow just outside of the bedroom door, if I am just lazing in bed.  There is no pretending to be asleep to the cat unless you are the cat.

However, if they were the ones to decide who was being bad or good in the house, I think it would be skewed.  The number of times I have told Dib not to do something (don't jump behind the TV, get off the table, that isn't edible) are too many to count. I am sure in his brain I am being the bad human, because I won't let him do the thing he want to do, which if the was an  agent for Santa, would it reflect badly on me.  On the bright side, if the cats were secret agents for Santa, I am pretty sure I can sway their opinion with some canned cat food.

Hot Metal Chicken

Do you ever have one of those moments where you find something funny and you are pretty sure that no one else is going to find it even half as funny as it is to you? Yeah. I seem to have a lot of those moments.

A Christmas not too long ago my grandmother had gifted me a bottle of perfume.  I don't wear a lot of perfume, because I hate trying to find a scent that I like and going into a perfume store is an instant migraine. I was surprised at the gift (and hoping it was a subtle hint that I stunk).   It was the name of the bottle that caused my mental funny bone to kick in.

I follow The Bloggess.  I read her blog, follower her on Twitter and I have gifted her books more than once. There is a lovely antidote about perspective that involves a six foot tall metal chicken called Beyoncé that is one of my favorite posts and one that has been most shared among my group of friends.  The only reason I bring it up, is that the perfume my grandmother picked up for me was Beyoncé Heat.  All I can think about when I pick up the bottle  and spritz it on my collar line is that I am going to smell like a hot metal chicken and then I start snickering.  I am sure that my grandmother picked it out for it's light citrus scent with a slight honeysuckle  glow, but it doesn't matter to me.  It is my hot metal chicken perfume and I rock that chicken.

Kickstarted Addiction

I think that I might have a Kickstarter addiction.  I don’t know if it is because I love all the fresh ideas that people are brave enough to put out there and seek funding for, or if it is because I enjoy the shiny new toy aspect of it. I think that it is probably a healthy dose of both.   Kickstarter is an all or nothing venture. They either raise enough money for their project or they don’t. If the project doesn’t raise enough money, you as a backer are not out any money, but it they do raise enough money, then you pay up.
Unflattering picture of  Krampus I kickstarted
Can you see where I might have a problem?  It is really easy for me to toss a couple of bucks on a Kickstarter that helps fuel some ones dreams and passions and get something unique in the process, than it is to get an overpriced mediocre latte. The latte I will most likely forget about before the day is over, unlike whatever Kickstarter project I have backed.  I will talk about the project, follow the updates and sometimes even dance around the kitchen scaring the cats when something I am super into gets funded.  I like to think that I am helping someone achieve a dream and as a benefit get something cool in the process.
That is not saying that everything that I support gets funded, or if it does get funded, follows through.  I have supported a few things that did not yield the intended result, but it has not made me jaded.  It has just given me a story to tell and a mystery to savor.  Perfect example of this is where I supported an expedition for salt and nuts in Brazil, and for my support I would receive some salt and some salted nuts. It wasn’t a lot of money, and I thought that my husband would enjoy munching on an exotic nut, and the salt was seasoning bonus. Originally I had planned on using the nuts and salt as stocking stuffers for the Christmas holiday, but things had gotten delayed.  I had received some updates from time to time how the expedition was going and some video feed on salt mining, and then there was silence. It went from regular updates and video to nothing.   The jungles of Brazil swallowed up the founder that Kickstarter and it is unknown if I will ever get the salt and salted nuts that I chipped in for.  I had chatted a good bit about the salt and nuts with one of my coworkers and how they were intended as a gift, which turned into a tongue in cheek conversation about euphemisms. (Experiment 452- quit snickering. I really mean it this time!) While I may never actually receive the salty delight that I paid for, the amusement of this has been completely worth it, and that is the entire point of my addiction. It amuses me.
Here are 4 projects that currently amuse me and are still accepting backers:
-          Alabaster Vol 1-2 by Osamu Tezuka
-          Air Tight, Stay Fresh, Spice Jars

Getting Off My Butt To Make Cornbread

There is one problem with self challenges.  It may not be a problem for other people, but it is for me, and that problem is that my mind will obsess about it.  It is like a hamster wheel that just keeps spinning for no other reason than just to spin.  I realized over the weekend that it had been a month and a half since I had truly tried a recipe from my Cook Book Challenge.  I disgust myself at times.  The recipes in the books won't cook themselves.  Then to top it off I gained two more cookbooks during Christmas. My mother had a good laugh as I opened up a cookbook on homemade candy bars and another book on canning.  I would groan and call uncle on this whole challenge, but I am at the half way point and there is plenty of time to catch up.
In the name of catching up, and because I am compelled by good manners to offer to bring something to a get together, and also because I do truly like to putz around the kitchen, I offered to bring something to the annual girlfriend gift exchange.  This is where a good majority of my girl friends get together and exchange presents and catch up with each other after a nice long holiday. Eat, Drink some more and be merry are all part of the experience.

Too Lazy to Flip this Picture
Lizzy hosted it this year, and a hearty winter soup was part of the menu.  I don't know about most people, but I do love a chunk of bread to go with soup, so I volunteered to bring bread for the meal. In my head, I was going to do this fancy braided bread that looked really awesome and probably was going to take half a day to accomplish. That was the original plan, then I realized that I had to work over the weekend, and complicated braided bread was not something I was going to have time for.
In fact, I was seriously debating on a quick run to the grocer to pick up french bread or table bread, but the monologue in my brain would not shut up. In fact the monologue got quite vicious, stating that if I had time to play games on my phone, then I had time to bake bread.

Flipping through the book, The Art of Bread by Cooking Club of America I settled upon Classic Corn Bread.  Corn Bread goes with almost everything, and the recipe looked almost like every other recipe that I have seen of corn bread.  With a lot of mental berating and very little skill, I toss a corn bread batter in the oven and flounced off to run a brush through my hair and find a shirt that didn't have flour on it, so that I would be ready to go when the corn bread was ready.

The gift exchange was fun, and thankfully the corn bread was a success. It didn't do all the horrible things that I thought it would in my mind, which mostly consisted of it not solidifying in the center or being dry.  It was also successful in the fact that it got the internal monologue to shut up for once, and compelled me to start looking at some of the cookbooks I still have on the list. Yay for small victories.

Laundry and Gratitude

With the beginning of a new year there is often time a pause of reflection. A reflection of life and the challenges and triumphs from the past year. Over all I could say very little happened last year, or perhaps a lot happened last year, and it is all a matter of perspective. The new year is good for one thing, and that is making me think about gratitude.

A couple of weeks ago I had invited my mother and the love of her life over for dinner and to put up the Christmas Tree.  Traditionally we have dinner and drinks, before we get to the tree hugging part of the evening. I really do mean tree hugging, because how else are you going to get the lights on the tree?   Over dinner we were trading stories of the past. because nothing brings forth a fresh bout of nostalgia like Christmas Traditions.

I don't know how we ended up on the subject, but I told my mother a story that she had never heard before. A story about why I am surprised to be alive, and one of the reasons I adore my husband. It was a story about laundry and gratitude.

Several years back and a few months prior to when my husband and I got married, we had bought a house. It was a beautiful house and gave us plenty of room to grow, however it did not come with a washer and dryer, like our apartment did. I had put off doing laundry as long as I could,. I draw the line at flipping my underwear inside out to get a second round out of them. It was time for me to take the six loads of laundry to the laundry mat, so that I could quite wearing the back of the closet rejects.

I had loaded up the vehicle, grabbed the detergent and every quarter that could be found in the house and headed to the only laundry mat that I was aware of, which was near the old apartment. It was dark out when I finally got everything in the car an ready to go. It was the sort of darkness that seemed to cancel out light sources and caused the normally bright street lamps to look like dim night lights childhood  nightmares in the quagmire of the gloom.  The laundry mat was devoid of human life other than me. It was weird, and I probably should have taken it as a sign and turned around and gone home, or at the very least tried to find a laundry mat closer to the new house. The need for clean undergarments was a strong motivating force for me to suck it up and donate some quarters to the cause of proper hygiene.

I have no love for laundry.  I do however love my life. While I was sitting in the hard plastic chairs of the laundry mat, fiddling with the odd bits of entertainment that I had brought with me to make the time pass, I saw a young man walk past the the front of the laundry mat. I did not really think much of it, because the mat was in the middle of a residential area and people are known to walk. I didn't think much of it, until the young man turned around and walked into the laundry mat.

There is nothing creepier then a person coming into the laundry mat with no laundry. It is even creepier when said person decides to chat up the only person in the other wise empty laundry mat and then later follow them to their car an hour and a half later. It could have been harmless flirtation, but to me it felt like I was in the staring role of a murder mystery, and I was playing the role of victim.  Not a single soul other than the young man, that occasionally jingled something in his pocket came to the laundry mat the entire time I was there. There were no witnesses to be found if something were to go south.

When I finally drove away from the laundry mat with the piles of clean cloths in the back of the car, half of them folded and half of them shoved in the basket once they were dry enough, I pondered over how I was still alive.  All of the logic in my brain told me that I should have expired my last breathe in that laundry mat.  That laundry mat that did not have any sort of security camera's or rest room, but was nothing but the bare minimum to get the clothes clean I should have died in and perhaps me in a different dimension did.

I was still shaking when I got home.  My soon to be husband had never seen me so rattled as I told him the story. I fell into a puddle of tears on the living room floor as the adrenaline started to leave me.

The next day, my soon to be husband bought a washer and dryer so that I would never have to go back to the laundry mat ever again. We weren't planning on buying such an expensive item for several more weeks, since we wanted to have a cushion for any unanticipated wedding expenses.  I had never been so grateful in my life.  It would have been easy for him to shrug off my entire experience and tell me I was over reacting, or even tell me to try and find another laundry mat since that one creeped me out, but he went above and beyond to quell my fears, and even though I still hate laundry and folding it is my least favorite pastime, I would much rather fold laundry then be an unsolved murder.

Sharing the story with my mom, while we finished are evening meal made me recognize that I hate being vulnerable.  Not a lot of people do like to be vulnerable, but I really have a problem with not being in control and that moment in the laundry mat was one of those moments that I rarely share with people, because it is one of those moments I was the most vulnerable and had the least amount of control.  I have come to the realization that it is okay to be vulnerable, because without being unprotected I would have no depth to my gratitude.  In order to be truly grateful, you have to know why you are grateful.  I know why I am grateful.
